Upper South Coast bowls: When load-shedding brings out the romance

News and results from Upper South Coast bowling clubs.

SCOTTBURGH BC

Bowls by candlelight

THE fifth round of the Business Action Bowls was scheduled for last Friday at 6pm.

Unfortunately, load-shedding was scheduled for the same time.

Not to be put off, Eunice (SURNAME) and her team got busy putting sand and candles into paper bags and put them all along the lines of the rinks.

All the teams arrived and the games began in daylight. As darkness descended a most amazing sight emerged.

The green turned began to glow. It got more and more difficult to see the jack, but thanks to torches on cellphones, the jacks were lit up.

There was not one complaint or player wanting to give up. All 12 ends were completed.

Comments ranged from very romantic (not said about bowls very often), an amazing experience and congratulations to Scottburgh BC for ensuring the competition continued.

The final round will be this Friday (29th). Up to this time the players have played in the rain and the darkness, let’s hope the final night is hassle free.

Well done to all players for taking part so enthusiastically throughout the tournament. Also a big thank you to all the members who have worked so diligently week after week to make the tournament a success.

Club champs final should be a cracker.

Candlelight bowls at Scottburgh BC proved to be a wonderful evening, despite the load-shedding.

There were no scheduled monthly competitions this week but there was much and considerable variation in general activity.

In addition to the usual tabs-in games, the next rounds of the men’s handicap singles were played and some very close matches were evident with several going all the way to the 21 ends.

Many games were of a very high standard as can be confirmed by the groups of spectators that came to witness the matches.

And then there were two semi-finals for the title and the final of this club championship is due to be played this Saturday (30th), which should be a very good to watch.

On Human Rights Day, a series of fun games were organised in a Paul Jones format, with each member of a trips side playing lead, second and skip.

The winners were the ‘pairs’ side of Dave Jaap and Ronnie Seymour with a score of + 8, and they took away vouchers from the Braai Hut up at the Mall.

Thank you to all the local businesses that have supported for the club with gift vouchers.

There will be a Champagne Breakfast (with the famous Rochford ‘punch’) followed by bowls, on Monday, April 22.

The club extends a warm welcome to all visitors/holiday makers to the area, and all bowlers are welcome to come join the members on the greens.

There’s a ‘New to Bowls’ group every Wednesday morning, contact Lyn Seymour at 082 8782051) and she will help you from there.

By George, a terrific trips victory

THE monthly mixed trips competition, sponsored by Hibiscus Brokers, was won by Gina George, Glynnis Corbett and Ogies Steyn on 4+23.

Runners-up on 4+19 were John Chamier and John and Estelle Collier. Second session winners on 2+11 were Richard and Helen Turk and Rose Daniel.

Forthcoming attractions include ladies trips this Thursday (28th).

Vice-president Mally Swanby (back) congratulates the winners of the mixed trips at Sezela BC, namely Dave Billet, Moira Millard and Roy Jack.

On the same morning a KBA mid-week fours section competition which includes the team skipped by Moira Humphrey. Starting time is 9am for both competitions.

Tabs-in times revert to 1.45pm for 2pm as from April 2. On the subject of tabs just a reminder to old and new bowlers alike that the dress code is mufti for Tuesdays and whites on Thursdays and Saturdays, which means either club shirts or whites.

SHORT AGAIN

SEZELA BC

Superb turnout for trips … thanks to sponsors

THERE was good support for the mixed trips competition last Monday, with visitors from AMBC, Scottburgh and Umkomaas.

Entry was a total of 66 bowlers and there was sponsorship from Scottfin Insurance Brokers, Atlanta Spur and new sponsor Pennvalley Pub and Restaurant.

Sezela BC’s (from left) Avril Black, Sandy O’Donoghue and Gaynor Symons won their section of the recent KBA women’s trips tournament.

Bowls will have great difficulty existing if it were not for these businesses so, as always, bowlers are most grateful for their generosity.

Winners on 4+23 was Sezela team, Moira Millard, Roy Jack and Dave Billet.

Second session winners on 2+12 were Dave Lyon, Charles Douglas and Gaynor Symons who finished on an overall 4+20 but were pipped on a count-out with runners-up Bob Elliot, ‘Ogies’ Steyn and Marion Kelly, also on 4+20.

Jerry Davey, Chris Geyer, Mally Swanby and Gay Symons represented Sezela in a tournament at The Bell Bowling Club last Thursday and enjoyed very competitive bowls.

Gay was in excellent form as she was when playing with Sandy O’Donoghue and Avril Black in winning their section in the KBA women’s trips on Saturday.

Sandy O’Donoghue, Gay Symons, Irene Hutton and Pam Lyon made up the team that beat the Village Bowling Club 32-13 in the first round of the KBA midweek league played last week.

The men’s trips team of Mally Swanby, Jerry Davey and Chris Geyer, won two of their KBA trips games but failed to go through to the play-offs.
