Herald Fishing: Record-breaking year at Paddock fishing compo

Anglers came from far and wide to prove themselves in the individual categories as well as the team event, all looking to land the sought-after winning catch.

The 2019 edition of the Paddock fishing compo continued the rich and successful history of this popular family event.

The weather was stunning and the food delicious, as always.

Around 250 campers set up tents around the club with more than 400 people casting their lines.

The anglers yielded a record breaking total of 691.564kg of fish.

Eric Dunstone’s dam yielded most fish, the total a whopping 238.06kg.

Biggest bass of the year was caught by Dewald Beetge and weighed in at 4.22kg, this came from Billy Vorster’s dam.

Elize Scheepers caught the heaviest tilapia which weighed 2.20kg.

Max de Beer and his daughter Jade have success on Eric Dunstone’s dam, number 37.

Special mention must be made of Vossie Vosloo who hasn’t missed a compo for 36 years – this year he won first place in the men’s tilapia with a catch of 2.12kg.

Team Daiwa (Vossie Vosloo, Dean Vosloo and Jarryd Berning) won the men’s team event and caught a total of 49.62kg.

Team Wrinkles and Pimples (Azelle du Rand, Karen Snyman, Kayla Vosloo, Lana Vosloo) managed to place first in the women’s category and bagged a total of 41.06kg of fish.

The winning mixed team, Bob Hope (Ryan Wichmann, Madie Allison, Louis Allison and Lloyd Laxton) caught 30.30kg.

Vossie Vosloo hasn’t missed the compo for 36 years. He won the men’s biggest tilapia and also the team’s event.

Winning high school team, Master Baiters, caught a total of 8.92kg of fish. This team was made up of Fritz Dewit and Jordon Pelser.

The junior team winners, Jared Stedman, Braygen Massey, Kyle Grobbler and Josh Stedman aptly called ‘Eat my Worms’, caught 6.12kg.

Prizes to the value of R200 000 were handed to winning fishermen as well as lots of lucky draw entrants.

These prizes are made possible by the many companies who work closely with local farmers and as a community, the organising committee is grateful for the continued support of this event by these business owners.
