Off the Hook: Pennington teen named captain of KZN team
Ryan Pellew (15) has been named as the captain of the KwaZulu-Natal U16 team to compete in this year's Junior Bottom Fish Nationals.
Ryan Pellew (15) has been named captain of the KwaZulu-Natal U16 team to compete in this year’s Junior Bottom Fish Nationals in East London in June.
He is a pupil at Woodcrest Academy in Pennington, and is also a member of the Pennington Ski-boat Club.
Nick Nel, president of the KwaZulu-Natal Deep Sea Angling Association, congratulated Ryan on his achievement.

“He can be justifiably proud and we are sure that he will be a good ambassador for our province at this event, both on and off the water.”
Fishing this weekend was not too bad, but thanks to the big surf, several boats cancelled their trips to sea and opted to stay safe on land as there were absolutely huge swells that were running.

Some of the more experienced skippers and fishermen went out to brave the weather and managed to reel in some great catches.
Those fishing on the Rocky Bay pier caught a number of shad.
Shad are usually found on sandy bottoms in clear water, as well as near reefs and rocky ledges where there is foamy water.

Some of the best ways to get a bite on this fish is by spinning; or shore anglers can use a whole or cut sardine as bait. Some good live bait for larger shad are karanteen.
Skipper Adriaan Westraat on board boat Ruffian reeled in some nice sized Englishmen this weekend.
Captain and skipper of boat Wotalotigot, Wikus van Kraayenburg, caught a beautiful dusky rubberlip.

Wikus also holds the South African record for a dusky rubberlip, caught back in 2001 and weighing in at 9.79kg.
