For those following some of the big fishing competitions, the European Federation of Sea Anglers’ European Bottomfish Championships began this week and will end this Friday, September 13.

If you’re wondering why this competition is such a big deal when it’s not even local, it’s because there are no fewer than five South Africans – Wayne Gerber, Francois Beukes, Martin Gierz (captain), Allen Ford and John Luef – fishing in this competition.

They are wished tight lines and screaming reels.

Just a reminder to anglers closer to home – if you have any fishing achievements or are particularly proud of a recent good catch, do send through a photo and pertinent info to vanisham@dbn.caxton.co.za or WhatsApp it to 082-3008861.

If you are a complete fishing novice, remember to make sure you are wearing weather-appropriate gear, that you are aware of all the fishing rules and perhaps most importantly, that you’re in possession of a fishing licence!
