Players have a ‘spring’ in their step

The 'in-form' players stole the show.

JUST when I thought spring was in the air and everything that goes with it, old man winter crept up and kicked me, hence no report last week.

The Halfway Toyota monthly medal was quite a tight affair in all three divisions last weekend with Doc Mahabeer winning with a 65 to take the medal and the whisky.

In the A-division Selva Govender had the best gross score of 72 and Nick Wattrus the best nett with 66. Tony Moore won the count out over Thys Swart for the best gross in B-division with the Doc having his 65. Hans Beuthe scored 36 points in the C-division and Russel Freeman was runner up with 34.

The Alliance score of 92 was made by Hans Beuthe,Tony Power, Brian Richards and Gary Jones.

Two of the usual suspects missing from the medal winners, Graham Brown and Brian Richards, made amends on Wednesday as they strolled to a 43 point total to win by two from ‘the eldest member’ Colin Moodie and Mike Eley on 41.

Nick Wattres and Dave Sirey had the only two clubs and Dave also managed to lift the Stone this time with Tony Kennedy.

The ‘Terrible twins’ aka Coenie du Bruyn and Herman Grotius were the sponsors for Saturdays competition played as a Betterball Stableford in perfect golfing weather and all who played had a great day. The ladies also joined in and there was a fantastic array of prizes to be won.

The ‘in form’ players Nick Wattrus and Hans Beuthe stole the show with a great score of 46 which was three better than second placed Brian Richards and Graham Brown (they’re back) on 43. Only one point and count outs separated the rest of the field down to 10th prize.

Longest drive for the men went to Hilton McAuliffe and nearest the pins went to Shaun Jenkins 2nd, Mick Marriott 5th and Barry Kisten 10th.

For the ladies, Linda Els and Mandy Jones scored an impressive 40 points with Lauren Davey and Esme Hadley second on 38, Linda also was nearest the pin on 13th and Lauren took the 17th. It was a great day with super prizes and a fantastic vibe in the club. Looks like spring has arrived.

Coming up tomorrow (Wednesday) is an Individual Stableford and on Saturday is the P&G Construction monthly sponsored day. Lists will be on the board soon for the Inter-club tournament played at Umkomaas, Umdoni and Selborne. Teams will be entered and we’ll be looking for players in most divisions so keep your eyes open.

Flyers footnote: Golf is based on honesty. Where else would someone admit to making a seven on an easy par 3.
