Track Torque: Lewis wins again, Max crashes out

Verstappen chased extremely hard for more than half the race, putting great pressure on Bottas who had a damaged floor in his car.

The highlight of the Grand Prix at Imola, won by Lewis Hamilton, last weekend was the great scrap for second position between Valtteri Bottas in his Mercedes and Max Verstappen in his Red Bull.

Verstappen’s persistence paid off and he passed the Flying Finn at about the three quarter distance.

His success was, however, short lived when he crashed out several laps later with a blown left rear tyre.

This event took most of the energy out of the race and allowed Mercedes to win with Hamilton first and Bottas second.

In third place after a very good drive was Daniel Ricciardo in his very quick Renault, he really deserved his podium position.

A surprise fourth in his Alphatauri Honda was the Russian, Danill Kvyat and behind him was Charles LeClerc in the only point scoring Ferrari.

He in turn was followed in sixth and seventh places by Sergio Perez in the Racing Point Mercedes with Carlos Saintz and team mate Lando Norris, eighth, all very close together.

The two team Alfa Romeo cars of Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giavinazzi were in the last two point scoring places of ninth and tenth.

The great Imola track where Ayrton Senna was so sadly killed in 1994 had come up to the mark and challenged all drivers to their very best, with a tremendous mix of very high and some very low speed corners.

It was time to salute Senna again for the wonderful driver that he was.

There is a statue of him at the track, remembering the great man.

In two weeks’ time we move on to the next Grand Prix in Turkey.
