Swimmers go the extra mile to Swim for a Tin

There's already talk of it becoming an annual event.

In these difficult times it was truly heart-warming to see how the local swimming fraternity responded to the Swim for a Tin fundraiser, held at Suid-Natal High last Saturday.

At the time of writing, some R26 000 had been raised and many bags filled – these are not small bags – meaning that expectations had been massively exceeded and that more people can be helped than was originally planned or intended.

Organised by the Southern KZN Aquatics Association, there was support from the local swimming clubs – mainly Margate Swimming Club and Blue Ocean Aquatics – and their swimmers.

Among these was former world championship tour surfer, Heather Clark, who put in many lengths.

Speaking of lengths, the more swum, the more funds were raised.

The weather was perfect, sunny and hot, and the pool an irresistible sparkling blue.

Leandrie Nel shares a laugh and a refreshing drink of water.

There were swimmers of all ages and skill levels, but they all gave of their best.

A slide at one corner of the pool provided the youngsters with some light-hearted fun after the intense focus required in endurance swimming.

Overall organiser Gerhard Labuschagne was blown away by the turnout and the funds raised.

“It was really great to see,” he said.

Bayanda Hufner keeps things in focus after finishing his swim.

There’s already talk of it becoming an annual event.

Thanks were extended to those who helped with the scoring and time keeping.

And to Samantha Labuschagne, herself a former SA swimmer now turned coach (mainly) for her organisational excellence and interesting commentary on the mic.

Nobody went hungry, not with a braai fire on the go and tasty boerewors rolls available.

Dian Venter keeps the finish firmly in his sights.

STATS
71 swimmers took part
6731 lengths were completed
94 lengths average per swimmer
13 bags filled so far
168.27km swum in total
