Southern success for Kyle Kistensamy

He was the only player to break par in either round, shooting a 71 to go with his morning 74.

Kyle Kistensamy, one of the rising stars in KwaZulu-Natal golf, clinched the Southern KZN Open at Port Shepstone Country Club on a one over par score of 145.

He was the only player to break par in either round, shooting a 71 to go with his morning 74.

It was some consolation for the Prince’s Grant player who finished second to Gavin ‘Big Fish’ Sole of Southbroom GC at San Lameer CC last year.

Runner-up was Nate Trodd from Maritzburg Golf Club, who finished strongly with a three under back nine to secure second on his own on 75 and 72.

Jason Gilliver of Umdoni Park was third on 72 and 76. He started his afternoon round with a double bogey but still managed to pip the Big Fish by one.

The four-time champion had a tough day on the greens – having 72 over 36 holes – to finish with scores of 74 and 75.

Graham Fabricius returned to competitive golf after a long break and promptly topped his first tee shot.

He was using a set of borrowed clubs (with regular shafts) for the first time.

Still, he managed to par the first anyway and ended up shooting 76 and 75 to tie with Brad Grant of Camelot CC.

Dylan Underwood (Kloof) and James Barnard shared seventh on 152. Dylan had a pair of 76s while James had 72 and then 80.

Tied for ninth were Jean-Marc Bouic (Selborne Park) and Phiwa Mkhoma (Port Shepstone) on 153.

Bouic had rounds of 76 and 77, while Mkhoma started well with 74 – getting to two under par at one stage – and then made some unforced errors en route to an 79.
