Purple patches galore for Umkomaasters

Visitors are welcome to go and enjoy the wonderful course for themselves.

The excellent course conditions at Umkomaas Golf Club are certainly showing themselves in the great scores that continue to come in.
Each competition in the past couple of weeks has seen at least one golfer achieve a personal best score – can anyone say purple patch?

All thanks must go to dedicated committee members, especially Devlyn Fraser (chairman and volunteer greenkeeper) and his highly dedicated greens staff team.

With severely limited resources and rather ancient equipment, the team have really excelled at providing a wonderful course on which to enjoy these long summer days.

Evija McKelvey’s personal best of 88 helped her to contribute 45 individual points to her team’s total of 69 points in the novelty competition, sponsored by Chris Viljoen.

She and Jacques Kirstein were pipped in the count out by Willie and Sue Boucher who also racked up 69 points.

The competition should perhaps have been called ‘How to lose friends and win enemies’, with the first six holes betterball, the next six combined stableford and the final six the dreaded multiplication.

Thrilled with their incredible scores are Willie and Sue Boucher.

Thank you to Chris Viljoen for the wonderful Christmas meat prizes which paid down to seventh.

Winners will all be eating scrumptiously over the festive season.

The purple patches continued on Saturday during the Bruce Sutcliffe sponsored day.

Keith Vergottini had an unbelievable run seeing him shoot an astonishing 30 individual points on the front nine!

This included a 25-foot putt for a four-pointer on the first and a chip-in birdie on the 2nd for five points.

It’s no wonder he grabbed the jackpot prize for the most points in the four nominated holes.

His exceptional golf helped his team, including wife Lesa Vergottini, Devlyn Fraser and Alan Eriksen to scoop third place on a score of 95 points.

The fourball alliance, with all scores to count on the shorts, saw some incredible scores come in with regular prizewinners – the Bouchers, Nigel Hensen and Bing Opie taking first place on 99 points.

Just two points behind on second, was host Bruce Sutcliffe and his team of Francois Rossouw, Andrew Munn, and Len Brummer.

The groaning prize table also paid down to seventh place, thanks to the generosity of Bruce Sutcliffe and his clients.

Nearest the Pin prizes were won by Jacques Kirstein (4th), C Coxell (9th), Kuben Naidoo (13th) and Sabiha Hulley (17th).

Two clubs were won by Saga Reddy and Wally Kent.

The course will be open during the holidays except on Christmas Day and visitors are encouraged to come down and experience our beautiful course.

Who knows, you might also join the purple patch and shoot your personal best.
