Hooked on Fishing Catch of a lifetime for Jaycelen

He used a mackerel head with mullet fillets as bait.

Jaycelen Kyle Naicker of Port Shepstone hit the jackpot on Tuesday last week (26th) when he caught a massive giant trevally (GT) fish which weighed a whopping 30.89 kilograms.

Using a towing rope line, Naicker caught the GT at The Block, a popular fishing spot near the Port Shepstone lighthouse.

He used a mackerel head with mullet fillets as bait.

The catch was something of a surprise for Naicker as he was actually attempting to land a shark that day.

“This is without doubt the rarest fish I have ever caught. I decided to do some fishing, targeting non-edibles, and I was rewarded with a dream fish, definitely the catch of a lifetime. It’s a beautiful fish which I say needs to be released to swim free,” he said.

Naicker has been fishing since he was six years old and is a member of the KZN Social Fishing group.

He said that not only was this his ‘personal best’ catch in terms of species, but also his best catch altogether.

“Fishing requires a lot of patience. I’ve been targeting or trying for a ‘trophy catch’ since February 2020 and finally got one a year later,” he said.
