Happy return for Sezela bowlers

The club has survived some tough months, with no revenue forthcoming from competitions and bar takings.

Thirty very happy bowlers arrived at Sezela Bowling Club last Wednesday to enjoy, for most of them, their first game in many months due to the Covid-19 restrictions.

The club has survived some tough months, with no revenue forthcoming from competitions and bar takings.

However, it’s been able to show a profit for two months during this period as many members donated their usual monthly bowls spend to the club.

On top of this, membership has actually grown and a warm welcome is extended to Kevin and Pam Davis, Charlie and Sarah Bergh, Chris and Eleanor Oosthuizen, Helen Meyer, Ernest Janion, Alf Toy and John Cryer.

The club is back to its normal Monday competition bowls now that restrictions have been eased but will still continue to comply strictly with the protocols.

The 2020 Club Championships were of a high standard with many exciting finals being won in the last end.

In the ladies section Engela Wehr beat Claire Wilhelm in the novices; pairs winners Gay Symons and Engela Wehr beat Sandy O’Donoghue and Sandy Davis, while Jenny Wadeley beat Sue Padgett to take the ladies title.

Mally Swanby and Avril Black won the mixed pairs, beating Mike Carr and Bryony D’Oliveira.

The men’s section saw Mike Carr beat Jeff Upfold in the novices; Mally Swanby and Kevin White beat Steve Padgett and Brian Kidd in the pairs and Mally Swanby beat Jerry Davey to win the men’s singles.

In doing so, Mally ended Jerry’s reign as club champ for five years, a record which will be hard to beat.

John Cryer received the monthly floating trophy for the ‘Most Improved Player’ during the month of January, with Jeff Upfold, Sally Duffy being the other two recipients since inception of this award.

The trophy and prizes were donated by an anonymous sponsor, so whoever you, thank you.

The club recognised a number of stalwarts who have made major contributions to the facilities and surrounds and Jean Shannon, Helen Morrison, Dave Gibson, Colin McLeod and Geoff Donaldson were made honorary life members.
