Love and war for Village Eagles

On enquiry it appears that he was referring to the fact that the ball never goes where he wants it to go.

Traditionally, February is the month of love and because all of the Eagles just love their golf getting a full field to play at Selborne last week Tuesday was what we expected.

We were not let down as 72 golfers made the little white ball fly off those weapons (golf can feel like war sometimes) we call clubs.

As he reached into his bag to get a new ball out, one of the players was heard to mumble something about social distancing.

On enquiry it appears that he was referring to the fact that the ball never goes where he wants it to go.

Of course, he was talking to a new ball because the previous one had decided to sterilize itself in one of the water hazards that are dotted around Selborne Park Golf Club.

As I went around the eighteen holes of Selborne I just thought how lucky we are to have the golfing facilities that we do have on our doorstep.

Here we were playing a championship golf course that was in pristine condition and although we were restricted from a Covid protocol point of view, facilities that match the championship label that Selborne owns.

Last month I reported that we had a greedy golfer who had three two club scores on the short holes. We really thought that it would take ages for that to happen again.

Well Brian Green had other ideas. Three two clubs on the short holes were recorded by him just a month after Mervyn Perry achieved the feat.

When the committee sat down with the results it was suggested that we cut Brian’s handicap but the handicap master suggested that we deport him.

The handicap master was outvoted. Well done Brian.

It figures then that Brian would lead his team of himself, John van Niekerk, Brian Kidd and Paul Barnett to the first prize on a count out with 92 points.

Three 92s were posted which confirms my comments regarding the course.

Best lady was Ann Westwood (no relation to Lee) and best male golfer was, you guessed it, Brian Green.
