In a league of its own

The main difference between league and union is that in league, teams have 13 players a side and excludes breakdown contests (rucks), and has mostly uncontested scrums of six.

If all goes well, Rugby League will soon be established in KwaZulu-Natal under the administration of the South African Rugby League Sports Association, which is an affiliated member of the South African Rugby Union.

The introduction of rugby league to the province will also see the introduction of an honorary trophy, the Jan Prinsloo Provincial Cup, in honour of the former rugby league Springbok who now lives on the South Coast.

The main difference between league and union is that in league, teams have 13 players a side and excludes breakdown contests (rucks), and has mostly uncontested scrums of six.

“Rugby League is one of the fastest and most spectacular rugby codes in the world. It is envisaged by SARLSA to get the buy-in of certain key role-players to guarantee the success of the code in the province. We intend having negotiations with the different authorities to establish a firm and solid foundation for SARLSA’s ‘One Community’ upliftment project,” said Jan, who is the acting chairman for Rugby League in the province.

“The success of the sport’s implementation in KZN will depend on how soon Covid-19 can be dealt with,” said Jan.

According to Prinsloo, a development and business proposal was tabled to the executive committee of SARLSA and the go ahead was a mere formality.

He was looking forward to a fresh start for league in KZN.

“South Africa is seen by the rugby league world as a sleeping giant in terms of this code but the game is now being played in various countries on the African continent. Looking ahead, I foresee a fully fledged KZN league team competing against other provinces,” he said.
