Fabulous scores continue as Don Papas take Alliance honours
There are several stalwart teams, including some interesting new names
Seems that if you want to shoot a great score, you need to come down to Umkomaas and enjoy our beautiful course.
The outstanding scores in the past few weeks is a testament to the excellent work our small, but highly dedicated, greenkeeping and golf committee team is doing.
Saturday was the first round of the 2021 Alliance League with 13 teams entered to compete over the course of the year.
There are several stalwart teams, including some interesting new names, and a switch up of teams seems to have reaped rewards, particularly for the husband-wife combination of the McKelveys and Towards.
Dubbed the Don Papas, this team enjoyed the benefits of another superb round by Russel with great contributions by the other members too as they romped to victory with 95 points.
Second place was won by the Straight Hitters (R Clark, A Munn, J Boyd, A Pike) on 92 points with the Naickers (T Naicker, D Naicker, T Naicker, and K Naidoo) grabbing third with 91 points.
The best eight out 11 games count towards the annual Alliance League trophy so there is still time if you’d like to enter a team.
The first Allerton League fixture in nearly a year took place at Royal Durban last Sunday and saw the players from Umkomaas taking on the home side in hot and humid conditions.
Unfortunately, home advantage seems to have made a big difference with Royal emerging winners with 5,5-2,5.
Thirty-five players competed in the Wednesday School competition, and once again the scores indicate the great conditions on course, despite verti-cutting which took place earlier in the week.
Keith Vergottini’s good run continued with his 41 points, counting out Bing Opie for victory.
Third place went to Dave Kemp on 40 points, Rob Matthias’s 39 points earned him fourth, and Reg Clark’s 38 points good enough for fifth place.
Me thinks the handicapper is going to be busy chop, chop, chopping…
We hope to reinstate KidzGolf in the next few weeks once the local schools are back to full capacity in terms of Covid-19 protocols.
