Five club fun sees Gregg take honours

Chatting to Gregg afterwards he confirmed that he had played a similar competition just a few weeks earlier with the Strand Strikers and had managed to go even lower then.

Forty-three players tested their creativity in the 5-club individual Stableford competition held at Umkomaas Golf Club on the public holiday this week (22nd).

And while some selections, including leaving out the putter, left playing partners baffled, the scores were rather impressive.

Many players commented that they’d had their best rounds in weeks, calling into question whether the choice of 14 clubs helps or hinders.

Gregg Andersson, the five club master at Umkomaas Golf Club.

Emerging victorious with an exceptional score of 75 gross, amounting to 40 individual points, was Gregg Andersson.

His selection: driver, 8-iron, pitching wedge, lob wedge and putter. No guessing that he’s a long hitter then.

Chatting to Gregg afterwards he confirmed that he had played a similar competition just a few weeks earlier with the Strand Strikers and had managed to go even lower then.

Runner-up was Evija McKelvey who has been on a hot streak for some time. She played great golf and the putter was on fire.

Scoring 39 points, she mentioned that she hadn’t had to think too hard about the club selection as she was able to use the ‘usual suspects’ – driver, 3-wood, 5-iron, 9-iron and putter.

Paying down to fifth place, the scores were all better than handicap. Me thinks perhaps we should all be re-evaluating how we play some of the holes.

Betterball Bonus Bogey last Saturday saw a mixed bag of scores on the board with some clearly struggling with too many minuses and others dovetailing well.

The competition was eventually decided by a three-way count out on an impressive +6.

Taking top honours were Keith Vergottini and Graeme Coxell.

Second place went to Jacques Kirstein and Harold Horsley, whist Linda Toward and Lesa Vergottini finished in third place.
