Jukskei… a sport for everyone
Players were placed in different sections and competed against each other.
The Annual SA Academic Jukskei Tournament took place in Kroonstad, Free State, from March 15 to 19.
Juksei is an Afrikaans indigenous sport developed and played in South Africa.
The object of the game is to knock over a peg that is planted in a sandpit over a distance of between 11m and 16m (depending on age and gender).
It is played in teams with usually four members each.
“What made the tournament special this year was the fact that Indigenous Games (IG) teams were invited to participate,” said team manager, Annetjie van der Merwe of the South Coast, who has earned national colours for close on the past two decades.
Two KwaZulu-Natal teams took part in this tournament, one team in the C section and the IG team in the D section.
Players were placed in different sections and competed against each other.
During the week players took part in four player matches, trips as well as doubles.
The IG team of KZN did exceptionally well in the doubles matches, finishing second and third, earning silver and bronze medals respectively.
In the four player matches they came second and received silver medals.
“They really made KZN proud. Players are very positive and enthusiastic about jukskei and it is hoped that each district in the province will eventually have jukskei courts where schools may compete in interschool matches,” said Annetjie.
