Cruise control for Southerns against Kloof

Jack Cubitt (Selborne Park) played at seven, in order to finish early to join the family on a trip to the Berg.

It was a game the hosts Southern KwaZulu-Natal would have expected to win, but still, they did not take it lightly against visitors Kloof CC at San Lameer.

In the end it was a comfortable 6-2 win and it meant three wins out of three for the season so far.

They face struggling Mount Edgecombe CC next and will want to win that to top the log and then face the runners-up in the other pool to ensure a home semi-final.

Kai Hielckert (Port Shepstone CC) trumped Sean Kirby 2/1 to chalk up his first win for the season after a narrow loss and a half in the previous two games.

Jack Cubitt (Selborne Park) played at seven, in order to finish early to join the family on a trip to the Berg.

He would have played number two and as can often be the case in situations like these, he ended up losing 2/1 to Kyle Frost.

His mind could have been on trying to finish quickly, or it could have been put down to fatigue as he’s played a lot of U19 level golf this past week, having reached the semi-finals of the Nomads SA Boys U19 Matchplay Champs at Waterkloof Golf Club.

Chris Zietsmann (Selborne Park) eased to a 4/2 win over Josh Chandler, while skipper Jean-Marc Bouic (Selborne Park) lost 1-down to Gary Welsh, spinning a 48 degree wedge off the green and into the water, much to his stunned amazement.

He’s experienced the highs and lows already this season, having won when been four down and now having lost when been four up (after eight holes).

“Just lost concentration a bit,” he said, shrugging it off. No doubt he’ll bounce back.

David Rush (Southbroom GC) also returned his first league win, 1-up against Brandon Harrison.

He’s made a habit of going down the last hole, with his last five games (including Interzone) all being decided on the 18th.

Jan McDermott (Umdoni Park) won his game 2/1 against Geoff Chandler, despite being unable to find his approach on the 13th and 14th holes, even though they did not appear lost.

Mitch Hampson (Umdoni Park) won easily against Travis Welsh, 4/2, while Jason Gilliver (Umdoni Park) had a short day, beating Kurt Northmore 6/5.
