Golf league team one step closer to promotion

Playing at number seven, Kai Hielckert (Port Shepstone CC) earned a hard-fought half against Godfrey Ngcobo.

The Southern KwaZulu-Natal league golf team built on their recent Interzone success with a commanding 6,5-1,5 win in the A section over Bluff National Park away last Sunday.

It’s never a good idea to take Bluff lightly, especially away, and with a number of team members playing their for the first time, it was not a time for overconfidence.

Captain Jean-Marc Bouic was pleased with the result, describing it as a solid win.

James Coull (Port Shepstone CC) made his debut but lost his game 1-down to Marc Dean.

He was all square going down the last and flew his wedge miles over the green from about 160 metres out.

He can hit it a long way but even that was a shock for him.

Playing at number seven, Kai Hielckert (Port Shepstone CC) earned a hard-fought half against Godfrey Ngcobo.

At six, Chris Zietsmann (Selborne Park) played like he had a lunch date he was worried he might be late for, winning his game 7/5 against Leon Maritz.

Bouic (Selborne Park) was his usual model of consistency, winning 4/3 against Billy Botha.

Jan McDermott (Umdoni Park) saw off Dean Stopforth 3/2 while Mitch Hampson also had a short day, winning 5/4 against Patrick Fitzgerald.

Jack Cubitt (Umdoni Park) displayed some superb skill to beat Keagan Horner 6/5; he was four under par at the time.

Veteran Gavin Sole (Southbroom GC) eased to a 4/2 win over Keegan Hezlett.

The team has won both away games and now has two at home, against Kloof CC ‘A’ on May 2 and Mount Edgecombe CC ‘A’ on May 30.

Then it’s on to the semi-finals and finals, with wins there meaning promotion back to the Premier League.
