Mountain bikers ready to race

The mountain bike stage race offers participants 263km of breathtaking trails between Himeville in the southern Drakensberg and Scottburgh here on the mid-South Coast.

Pro and leisure mountain bikers are ready to compete in this year’s KAP sani2c, which takes place from May 13 to 16.

With the Covid-19 lockdown being introduced last year, the usual sani2c event was not possible around this time of year, and was instead postponed to December.

Many riders have since settled into new teams and, together with the organisers, have amped themselves up for this year’s highly anticipated event as things slowly return to normal.

At the December 2020 KAP sani2c, mountain bikers, Gert Heyns and Arno du Toit took first place as DSV Pro Cycling. They have joined new teams for this year’s race.

There are two versions of the three day event which will take place over a four day period.
The Adventure is from Thursday to Saturday (13-15 May), and The Race is from Friday to Sunday (14-16 May).

For supporters and spectators in the mid-South Coast areas, Vernon Crookes Nature Reserve is one of the popular locations for people to go and watch on day three of the event as riders can be seen at the spectator point within the reserve or catch them at the entrance.

From Vernon Crookes, supporters can drive towards Umzinto for about 10km and then turn left to merge onto the N2 where they will start to spot riders to the left of the N2.

Thereafter, take exit 110 towards Scottburgh and make your way to the bridge to look down on the riders approaching Scottburgh beach via the popular floating bridges, or go to the main beach to give them some final encouragement.

The finish line is at Scottburgh Golf Club.

For supporters and spectators who wish to keep up with participants throughout the race, a spectator map is available on the sani2c website www.sani2c.co.za
