Umdoni triumvirate in promising form

Next up is the David Suddards at Durban Country Club on June 6, followed by league against Mount Edgecombe CC on June 13.

Umdoni Park‘s triumvirate have certainly played some excellent golf over the past few weeks.

Jason Gilliver, Jack Cubitt and Mitchel Hampson played for KwaZulu-Natal at the South African Country Districts tournament at East London in convincing fashion.

The KZN won all four of its games to lift the massive shield with ease.

Jason Gilliver of Umdoni Park Golf Club.

Gavin Sole (Southbroom) was also part of the team, with the other four players all from Ilembe Golf Federation, namely Chris Erasmus, Tom Lovett, Koenie Erasmus and Thabiso Magwaza.

They only had a few days off before the KwaZulu-Natal Open teed off at Selborne Park last Friday.

Jason entered late and was fortunate to get in after the withdrawal of another player.

He ended in a tie for seventh place, returning rounds of 71, 70, 74 and 73.

He said he hit the ball really well and made six two clubs over the first two rounds.

However, he struggled with the putter, with the last day the worst where he had six three-putts.

Still, he’s feeling good about his game, plans to manage the putting better and was pleased he was at least able to play!

The winner was Christian Maas of Pretoria Country Club on -17. That’s some quality golf.

Meanwhile, Mitchel had a topsy-turvy week, with rounds of 74, 67, 81 and 72, to finish in a tie for 15th on +6.

The irony is that he reckoned he hit the ball better for his Sunday morning 81 than he did in the final round.

Jack got off to a rough start with 78, got it back the next day with 71 and then flatlined a bit on Sunday with 73 and 75.

He finished in a tie for 27th place, just pipping Gavin Sole who was one shot worse.

Jack felt his putting let him down, something that is usually a strength,

Next up is the David Suddards at Durban Country Club on June 6, followed by league against Mount Edgecombe CC on June 13.

Then it’s the KZN Closed at San Lameer CC over 72 holes on July 3 and 4.

After that it’s a league semi-final against Simbithi on July 11 and then hopefully a promotion final on July 18.
