Allan Eriksen clinches Scottburgh champs

On Saturday morning and all nature shouted 'fore', the breeze blew gently off the sea and seemed to bring a message of hope and cheer to all as they waited their turn.

Not too long ago we saw Phil Mickelson win the PGA tournament… not bad for a 50-year-old who left the youngsters in his wake.

This win gave all us ‘silver hairs’ at Scottburgh Golf Club encouragement for the local club champs – if he can do it why can’t I?

This certainly rubbed off on Hans Beuthe as on Wednesday he hammered the field to win the Individual Stableford with 41 points.

Another oldie Mike Eley had a respectable 38 for second place with Mick Marriot third with 34. (How do I describe Mick’s hairstyle?)

They say that only when a man stands at the altar on his wedding day does he experience the same sensation of impending doom as he feels when he stands on the first tee at the annual Club Champs.

On Saturday morning and all nature shouted ‘fore’, the breeze blew gently off the sea and seemed to bring a message of hope and cheer to all as they waited their turn.

There were some very good scores returned and many of us couldn’t wait for Sunday.

However, Sunday turned out very different with many of those good scores blown away with the stiff cold breeze coming out of the south east.

Overcoming all the trials and tribulations ‘Old Snorky’ aka Allan Eriksen, blew away all opposition with 144 to be crowned Champion Golfer of 2021 – a well deserved and great achievement after all Allan’s recent loss. Stalwart Barry Kisten had the best nett with a score of 141.

Captain Bob Hall had the honour of presenting himself with the B division trophy with a very good 165, John Mills taking the nett with 145.

Hans Beuthe carried on his good form of late by winning the C division with 67 Stableford points with his regular partner, Tony Power, running close with 63 for second place.

The ladies also had a good turnout for their champs with Debbie du Toit being crowned winner.

Not to be outdone by husband Bob, Linda Hall claimed the B division trophy with Esme Hadley taking the C division.

Unfortunately, Lady President Mary Eckley could not be there to give out the prizes as she is in hospital recovering from a broken hip after a fall at home.

The club bar was in great form afterwards with the braai’s going and all the “what ifs, if onlys” abounding in the general chatter amongst the members. Ah well, there’s always next year!

Flyer’s footnote: Golf is 20 percent mechanics and technique. The remaining 80 percent is philosophy, humour, tragedy, melodrama, companionship, cussedness and conversation over a beer.
