Eventful week for golfers

We were privileged to welcome a host of Umkomaas players as their course is undergoing spring treatment.

What a week of weather we had at Scottburgh Golf Club. Monday and Tuesday were like being in lockdown level 5 and the rest of the week was like August that came a little late to the party. Nevertheless we’re still here and managing to swing a club.

The Umdoni raiders came, saw and conquered the field on Wednesday in the form of Mike Eley and Geoff Thommasen, scoring 39 points in a betterball Stableford.

Counted out into second place were Thys Swart and John Mills who in turn counted out Ian Walker and Clyde Leisegang, both taking the afternoon away from work.

As a courtesy to them we didn’t bring them into the fines session, but former Umko captain Peter Toward and partner Brian Kessel had their photo taken holding our famous Stone and like the gentlemen they are they paid for the privilege.

It was monthly medal time on Saturday sponsored by our Local Choice pharmacy.
Nivash Mahabeer played alongside his dad and also showed him how to score 75 to win the A division gross with uncle Barry Kisten winning the nett on 69.

No surprises in the B division as Brian Richards had the best gross with 84 and Wayne Simpson the nett also with 69.

In form Thys Swart had 36 Stableford points to outdo Mick Marriot by one in the C division. Brian Richards 66 nett being good enough for the September medal.

There were five nearest the pins on offer with Mike Hogan picking up on the 2nd, Debbie du Toit 5th, Tony Power 10th, Thys Swart 13th and Hilton McAuliffe the 17th.

Wayne Simpson had a field day as he found the hidden holes had a 2-club along with Mike Hogan and won the attendance draw, off to the Wild Coast he should have gone.
Brian Richards’s team of Denis Brown, Wayne Simpson and Tony Power claimed the Alliance with 87 points.

The ladies played a betterball Stableford and lady Captain Esme Hadley and Mandy Jones took the honours on 39 with Debbie du Toit and a ghost for company second on 37.

Wednesday is a betterball Stableford and on Saturday the greenkeeper will be taking his revenge on his detractors by hosting a fourball Alliance with some twists in between.
Flyer’s footnote: Confidence builds with successive putts. The putter then is a club designed to hit the ball part way to the hole.
