No stopping Thubalethu in 1000 mile challenge
Opting to start his race at 15:30, Thubalethu expressed that there is a method to his 'madness' as many would see it considering his start time.
After having taken part in and completed some of the world’s most grueling MTB races, Thubalethu Shange of Oshabeni, near Port Shepstone, is gearing up to take on the Joburg to Blouberg 1000 Mile Challenge, which starts today (30th).
The challenge marks Thubalethu’s comeback to mountain bike cycling after suffering a serious injury in the Freedom Circuit race earlier this year that sidelined him for five months.

“It was really tough and hard to come back from because I was only left with 50km to go in a 700km race. I suffered a broken shoulder and broke quite a few ribs as well. But my mind is strong, that what gets me through these races, and that’s what got me through my injury,” Thubalethu said.
The race is set to start at the Three Rivers Lodge in the Vaal, with the finish line in Blouberg Strand, Cape Town.
Thubalethu will be competing in the race alone, with no assistance of any kind from any individuals or technological gadgets.

Opting to start his race at 15:30, Thubalethu expressed that there is a method to his ‘madness’ as many would see it considering his start time.
“It is a very awkward time I know, and anyone one who would like to know the reason why I chose to start at 15:30 will have to stay tuned to my social media pages and race live tracking to find out why,” Thubalethu said.
Having previously competed in both the Munga and the Munga Grit as well as the 36One MTB Challenge and Freedom Challenge, Thubalethu looks to chase the world record in this race to cement himself as one of the top extreme mountain bike riders.
All those looking to keep up with the action, can track Thubalethu live on the freedom circuit website.
