Captain Meshan strikes winning boundary

In the first game at Hammond Field, UKZN batted first and was bowled out for just 94

The Southern KwaZulu-Natal cricket team, on the back of two wins in the KZN Cricket Union Premier T20 League so far this season, played much tougher opponents last weekend, in a double-header, against UKZN and KCCD respectively.

In the first game at Hammond Field, UKZN batted first and was bowled out for just 94.

Bryce Allchin finished with figures of 4-27 runs in four overs and stalwart Gershion Lawrence with 2-19 runs in his four overs.

In reply, Southern KZN blitzed its way to the total in merely 10 overs for the loss of only two wickets.

Bilal Hassan smashed an unbeaten 53, with Suhel Patel ably assisting with 26.

In the afternoon game Southern KZN took on inform KCCD and its much vaunted batting line up.

Southerns asked KCCD to bat first and watched as Jason Redinger brought up his 50 in what felt like no time at all.

It didn’t help with strike bowlers Allchin and Raja Kazi being off the field with injury.

However, Sanolin Pather (4-41) and Lawrence (2-22), managed to keep Southern KZN in the game, with Pather finally dismissing Redinger for 110.

KCCD had amassed a mammoth target of 180 runs and a huge batting display in response would be needed.

This is exactly what was provided.

Hassan and Patel got off to a flier, scoring 20 runs in six balls and 28 runs in nine balls respectively, before losing their wickets in quick succession.

This left Sachin Kalkapersad (30 off 26 balls) and Morné Bishop (36 off 32 balls) to steady the innings.

Match ‘finishing off’ contributions coming from Pakamile Zokufa (24 off 20 balls) and captain Meshan Lanka (20 off 20 balls), who hit the winning four which secured a significant victory, with a ball to spare.

Team manager Brandon Hooke, said it was ‘an amazing performance with great resilience shown by the team’.

The next game is against Rhtym DHSOB at Port Shepstone Country Club this Sunday (10th) at 09:00.
