Future Sharks bite at a young age

The selection process was aimed at identifying young players for the upcoming New Generation High Performance camp

The Sharks together with the Kwa-Zulu Natal Primary Schools Association held a selection process at Douglas Mitchell Sports Club in Uvongo recently.

Young players in the U12 and U13 divisions from primary schools all over the Southern KZN region, including Kokstad Primary, Scottburgh Primary and Creston College were in attendance as well as the Southern KZN Rugby Academy student-players who assisted coaches from The Shark’s New Generation.

The selection process was aimed at identifying young players for the upcoming New Generation High Performance camp, which is set to take place from at Jonsson Kings Park Rugby Stadium October 6 to 8.

Doug Haralambous, President of the Southern KZN Rugby Academy, said he believed this was an excellent initiative in identifying young boys still at grass root level.

“I am very pleased that The Sharks have embarked in an identification programme of this nature, covering the whole province. The young boys selected will also be tracked throughout their high school career. Around 10 have selected rom the Southern KZN Region,” he said.

The camp will be fully funded by The Sharks and will include meals and accommodation. A total of 92 players, 46 from each age group will be invited to attend the camp, and will be accommodated at Northwood Schools in Durban.

The camp is not compulsory for those who are selected, and any player who finds that they cannot attend will not be penalised in future.

Rowan Simon, a student-player from the Southern KZN Rugby Academy, helps with building the future generation at the recent selections.

“Both private and public rugby playing primary schools will be approached to identify promising players, while talent scouts have identified a few boys at primary school fixtures this year,” said Zola Mazwi, The New Generation Sharks Manager.
