Bridge returns to South Coast

Online bridge has become the new trend among players thanks to its user-friendly platforms, and Covid-19 restrictions have made this even more popular.

People play bridge for several reasons: It’s a great game, it’s intellectually stimulating, and can be very competitive. It’s also a great way to make new friends, interact socially, and stimulates much discussion over drinks after the game.

Typically it is played with a partner at a table of four and you try to earn the most points through making bids and winning tricks. The rules are easy enough to learn and playing for fun but mastering the card game on a competitive level can take a lifetime.

Computer bridge will satisfy the first criteria but does not cater for what in many cases is the most important reason for the average person who plays bridge; the social aspect.

”Bridge is popular around the world among all ages especially in countries like Poland, Turkey, England and America but in South Africa unfortunately it has become an old person’s game and it shouldn’t be, it should be taught in schools,” said Eric Annegarn, chairman of the Lower South Coast Bridge Association.

The Margate Bridge Club has been around for at least 30 or so years but closed temporarily due to Covid-19. The club has now officially reopened its doors. Face-to-face bridge restarted at the Margate Country Club recently, and will continue every Friday.

The focus is now to gain back popularity and membership for the South Coast bridge club post-Covid.

For further information or if you do not have a partner to play with you can arrange for one beforehand by contacting Richard Moore on 078 7236408 or Eric Annegarn on 082 5510068.

Computer bridge is boring, the association encourages you to come to the Margate Country Club and try your hand at bridge.

Masks and sanitising will be necessary.
