Tidy Towns leads Margate Pier clean-up

Local businesses have been challenged to adopt an area and dedicate just 30 minutes a month to keeping it clean.

A community clean-up at Margate Pier on August 29, driven by Tidy Towns Shelly to Margate, saw learners, parents and volunteers join forces to tackle litter along the coastline.

The team focused on the area to the right of the pier, removing more than 20 black bags of litter and hundreds of glass bottles from among the rocks.

A special thank you was also extended to Scott Kvaslvig, who removed the refuse collected.

In an exciting twist, Just Property South Coast has challenged other local businesses to adopt an area and commit to giving it some attention every month.

Stephen Herbst of Tidy Towns Shelly to Margate said the Tidy Towns team, together with the property group, decided to clean the area in front of Margate Beach Club and Santana Flats.

He said Margate Beach Club has supported and donated to their efforts since they started in late 2021, and continues to support the initiative.

“What was meant to be an hour of community service took us just 30 minutes,” he said.

Herbst encouraged local businesses to consider adopting an area and dedicating just 30 minutes a month to keeping it clean.

“Imagine what our towns could look like if every local business adopted just one small area and gave it 30 minutes a month,” he said.

“Together, small actions do make a big difference.”
