Super seven for Big Fish at Kokstad

The only way, really, to beat the Big Fish is to ‘out-consistent him’ and that’s very difficult on KZN’s tight courses.

Gavin Sole (Southbroom Golf Club) has been in a rich vein of form of late and added the East Griqualand Open title to his long list of accomplishments over the years.

He was level par for the day, on scores of 73 and 71, winning by two shots.
He has now won this tournament, held at Kokstad GC every year during summer’s stormy season, seven times.

“Three to go,” he quipped, in reference to the 10 he’s won at the San Lameer Open, an event he won in mid-January.
These two follow his victory at the Southern KZN Open at Port Shepstone Country Club in December last year.
You could also throw in the Southern KZN Closed, played at the same time as the San Lameer Open.

The Big Fish is now 52 years old and still remains a player of impeccable quality and consistency, so much so that the up-and-coming youngsters are still trying to figure out how to beat him.

The only way, really, is to ‘out-consistent him’ and that’s very difficult on KZN’s tight courses.

Sole is so consistent and steady that when he does miss a fairway, it can be a bit of an issue and his playing partners start to fidget uncomfortably.

Of his game at Kokstad, Sole said he had made some good birdies but also some vital par saves, that kept him ahead of his nearest challengers, Kairav Maduray (Royal Durban) and Koos Jacobs (Umdoni Park).

“Greens and course in general were in as good shape as I’ve seen for a while and it’s clear some real effort is being made,” he said.
“The Southbroom guys really enjoy this event, with a group usually making the trip, staying at Sean Baker’s place.”
Baker, who finished sixth, is a former EG and Southern KZN player, now based in George, but who usually makes the trip to play in the event.
