It was a hot, humid and sticky day as we teed up for an individual Stableford at Scottburgh Golf Club last Wednesday.
Quite a bit different to the mountains where the Flyer had spent the last two weeks. Rain, rain and more rain and fancy meeting two Scotties families up there at Drak Gardens.
‘Two Petes in a pod’ playing golf with their better halves on one of the sunny days, wherever you go you will meet a Scottie somewhere. TM Moodley put in the best score of 35 to win by one from Alan Eriksen and Mike Lithgo both on 34, Alan getting the nod for second spot.
There was an influx of our Northern friends as they stayed on to partake in the quiz evening later that night. TM and Stuart Proctor made 2 clubs, but the hidden holes were vacant. Captain Bob Hall in trying to improve his game bought a new set of irons and tried them out on Wednesday.
They didn’t work too well as Bob picked up the Stone, I hope he did better with the quiz. The Umko boys that played stayed on for the very successful evening which was arranged by the ladies section with Mike Eley compering the show.
On Friday, the five pin was almost a family affair. Pumba Joubert spoiled the show when he won with 10 points and R200, the Gilliver family were there in force and daughter Kelly making a welcome return popped in and scored 9 to take Uncle Pete Morris’ R100. Somehow mom Gilliver came last, can’t think why as she normally takes her two menfolk to the cleaners, must still have had the mountain air on her mind.
Halfway Toyota sponsored last Saturday’s combined Stableford which was always going to be a wet afternoon. The dark and dingy weather didn’t put off Wayne Simpson and Denis Brown as they cantered to a 64 point total. Ian Walker and Clyde Leisagang played through the rain and were rewarded with second place for 62 points, completing the podium were the brothers Deena and Darryl Govender with 58. Byron Stander got the only 2 club and the hidden holes popped out only to be caught by Clyde Leisagang and Wayne Simpson. Dave Meredith has a tendancy to pick up Stone Last and this week he had Herman Grotius to help him with the lifting, it was the rain said Dave.
It’s a betterball Stableford this Wednesday (22nd) and DisChem will be sponsoring this Saturday’s (25th) monthly medal.
Flyer’s footnote: It’s a law of nature that everybody plays badly when being waved through.
