National ‘bronze’ for three South Coast anglers

It was a wonderful achievement for the three South Coasters, as well as the KZN team.

The KwaZulu-Natal women’s team earned bronze at the South African National Freshwater Bank Angling Union Championships held at Bloemhof Dam in North West Province recently.

Three South Coasters took part, namely Ena Ward, Cecelia Swanepoel and Irma Botes. This is a first for the South Coast, some history in the making.

Ena Ward (South Coast AC).

Manager Karma Spies (Vryheid) said it was a privilege to work with these inspiring, hard-working women.
Captain Mossie Mostert’s feedback was that it was ‘not easy’, as the competitors had to cast against the wind.

Irma Botes (Margate AC).

Despite this, the team spirit, motivation and discipline was of the highest order.
Day one was very hot and produced the bigger fish. Day two saw smaller fish caught but in greater quantity. Day three was wet, the game plan had to change and fish caught were few.

Every fish caught resulted in a shout of ‘impi’ across the Bloemhof Dam, such was the unbelievable team spirit and hard work.
The KZN women’s team was represented by Cecelia Swanepoel and Ena Ward (both South Coast AC) with Irma Botes (Margate AC), as well Sonja du Plooy (Dundee AC), Lyzette Smith (Dagbreek AC) and Catrien Botha, Nicolene Mostert and Jenna Adlam (all Vryheid AC).
