Sole extends record club champs streak at Southbroom
There were some very good scores despite the ferocious north-easterly wind.
Gavin Sole (52) won the Southbroom Golf Club strokeplay championships for the twelfth time in succession and fourteenth overall.
He scored 66 and 71 and this time is was his son Graham (19) who had the honour of knowing what’s it’s like to finish second, but miles behind.
This has previously gone to the likes of Mike Anthony, who just nodded, scratched his bearded chin and said ‘aye’.
Graham shot 73 and 73, his best ever score in a tournament and could continue the Sole legacy.
David Rush had 73 and 79 for third place. He’s played in at least 30 club champs, maybe more, since 1988. Who knows how many top 3s to go with five wins?
The B division was won by Stefan le Roux, showing that, like his brother Phil (two time winner), he’s also got some game. He finished like a space ship returning to Earth, burning up with an eight and a nine.
His scores of 86 and 94 were still enough to win by three (whew) from Det Wichmann, who had 91 and 92.
Simon Shusha was third on 88 and 95.
Overall nett went to 13 year-old Cameron Olivant (nett 77 and nett 69). Cameron shot gross 82, with an opening nine of 46, on Saturday and then 74 on Sunday.
Cyprian Xolo was runner-up on nett 73 and 74.
Saturday nett: Norman Jeffery 72, Malcolm Greenland 73.
Sunday nett: Johan Wentzel 71, André Attfield 74.
In the C division there was the extraordinary situation where five players tied for first place on 60 points.
After all the countouts had been done, the winner was adjudged to be Andrew Leckie, with Emil Hierhold runner-up and Don Osbourn third.
John Fox was fourth and Rob Meydell fifth.
Rob won Best Saturday, with John runner-up.
Best Sunday went to Malcolm Moorley with Joseph Stoellinger runner-up.
Best gross over 60s was won by Malcolm Greenland, winning his own sponsored prize, on 159, with Gary Purtell next on 161 and Johan Wentzel third on 170.
The women’s section saw Lindsay Owen return after a long absence to win her fifth title. She previously won, under her maiden name Blanckensee, from 1997 to 2000.
She scored a pair of 81s to beat multiple past champ Heather Anderson (89 and 83) by 10 shots.
Janet Lehmann was third on 89 and 88.
Things were much closer in the bronze division, won by Shelley Myers on 98 and 93.
Runner-up was Louise Leal on 96 and 96, with Sue Kupisiewicz third on 102 and 91.
Best overall nett went to Gjertrud Kok on 151, with Arlene Bailey next on 154.
Best Saturday Nett Eli Bachmann 73, runner-up Michelle van der Hoek 79.
In the copper division the winner was Regina Bossart on 62 points, by five from Augustine D’Ewes on 57, with Cynthia Daniels next on 56 points.
Best Saturday Precious Mkhungo 35 points. Best Sunday Jill O’Callaghan 27 points.
