Eleven Scotties runners cross Comrades finish line

Well done to all runners.

And off they go! One felt the energy and excitement mixed with nerves as over 17 000 runners took off at this year’s 96th Comrades down run.

After months of total commitment and dedication to training programmes, clocking long mileage, runners were more than ready to take on the challenge of 87.7km.The weather played its part and the day was set to be a successful one, with the finish at Kingsmead Stadium.

Scottburgh Athletic Club (SAC) had 11 runners cross the finish line with fantastic times and setting some personal best times as well which they certainly can be proud of: Siyabonga Howard Cele 08:44 first man from SAC; Innocent Jili 09:12; Dana Daniels 09:54 first lady from SAC; Msawenkosi Nyuswa 09:57; Raymond Khanyile 10:22; Lungelo Zama 10:40; Elouise Jones 10:44; Chantel Bromwich 10:58; Amanda Van Jaarsveld 11:08; Tammy Quarsingh 11:45 and Janeen Botha 11:48.

Sibusiso Mbambo who runs for Hollywood Bets, but trains with the SAC crew – ran a fantastic race in 08:21.
Unfortunately due to unforeseen illness – Ricky Pillay who was aiming to get his 30 year green number recognition was unable to start the race and Louis Nel did start but unfortunately did not finish. However, this most unfortunate setback will certainly not deter these dedicated athletes from standing at the start line again.

Chantel Purchase ran her 10th Comrades this year and will now proudly receive her Comrades Marathon Green Number. A green number is earned if one has completed the marathon 10 times – thus earing a place on the Comrade Green Number Roll of Honour. A huge congratulation to Chantel for this huge achievement.

Last but definitely not least a huge thank you to all the families and friends who came to support the runners along the road. Not to mention the many months of early morning training runs, back up support on the road – all leading up to this day – is all so appreciated!

The club was also thrilled to receive a generous donation of runners’ care packs from local business Scottfin Insurance Brokers before the marathon. This meaningful gift consisted of custom branded goodie bags filled with essential items for post-race recovery. Each bag included a revitalising energy drink, relaxing bath salts, important electrolytes, soothing arnica gel, a versatile hot/cold compression pack, nourishing body lotion, protective lip balm, and an assortment of delicious snacks.

Debbie Holroyd, CEO of Scottfin Insurance Brokers with Louis Nel, accepting the goodie bags on behalf of Scottburgh Athletic Club.

These remarkable individuals have taken the time to understand the demands and challenges that marathon runners face, providing not just a care package, but a token of appreciation and a morale booster to all participants. This contribution greatly aligns with the ethos of the club, fostering a supportive and resilient community.
