South Coast talent shines at SA Champs

The swimmers will have gained invaluable experience from the event.

A number of South Coast swimmers were part of the KZN team which took part in the recent SA School Sport Championship in Gqeberha.

It seems like the trip was somewhat of an ordeal for the KZN swimmers, especially those who went by bus, with the long journey and minimal sleep not necessarily enabling them to perform at the peak of their powers.

Considering all this, they still performed admirably and can be proud of their efforts in the various age groups in which they competed.
Former South Coaster, Everraud Raynard won the 100m freestyle (14 year olds) at the SA School Sport Championship in recently.

He clocked a time of 57:23 and won the race with a strong finish, surging ahead at just the right time.

Everraud shared gold with Ryan in an incredibly close 50m freestyle race. Both finished in a time of 26.07 with Greg Kalil (KZN) a fingernail behind on 26.08.

His 4x50m freestyle relay team won gold.

His team also picked up silver in the 200m individual medley as well as the 4x50m medley relay.

Everraud is now at Westville Boys’ High, having previously been at Penzance Primary and on the South Coast before that.

The more local swimmers are members of either Margate Swimming Club and Blue Ocean Aquatics (BOA).

Leah Scott and Alex-Zandré Labuschagne won gold medals for the 4x50m freestyle relay. Leah swam a personal best of 27:96 in this race.

The team also won silver in the 4x50m medley relay.

Leah also made the final of 50m butterfly. She finished fifth overall, narrowly missing the medals.

Gemma Allchin had to swim in the combined 17-18 age group and surprised herself with a sixth place finish i the 100m butterfly, despite not being in top health.
She also made the finals of the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke events.

Ella Bunge more than held her own, achieving personal bests in all six of her heats and finals.

Tehl-Cadi Day-Garden swam in five events and achieved personal bests in 50m breaststroke and 50m butterfly.

Kaitlyn Ramos swan in two finals, 50m breaststroke and 100m breaststroke.

Liam Venter achieved a top five in the 50m breaststroke.

Keagan Ramos won bronze in the 400m medley relay. He also swam in a few finals in other events. Next year could be even better, especially in the 200m races.
