Durbanites rule in thunee contest

The next chance to take the title will be in November this year.

Thunee gurus from Johannesburg, Cape Town and around KZN played in the first competition of the year at the Wild Coast Sun Hotel and Casino Resort last Saturday.

It was an excellent turnout of 100 teams in the hotly contested card game, with the visitors not only claiming the top prize but also second and third prizes.

Sogan Govender and Mohamed Swaleh Khan from Phoenix walked away with the R20 000 first prize.
Ravi Thavar and Jerry Naidoo from Durban claimed second place and prize winnings of R7 000, while Suran Appanna and Praven Appanah, also from Durban, claimed third place and R3 000 in cash.

Organiser Anandh Perumall thanked the sponsors and players for making the event a great success.

“The competition was certainly popular, and we are grateful for all those players who supported it. It was also well-supported by women, but as usual, the men outnumbered them.”

One of the regulars, Rodger Govender from Phoenix, said he had a great tournament. Although he was knocked out in the second round, he was glad he attended and met some of his friends.

Thunee is a popular trick-taking card game of the jack–nine family that originated in Durban. It is believed that the game was developed by indentured Indian labourers, which has stood the test of time.
