Bream on the bite

Sea conditions improved and the whole coastline had fishermen catching bream and more.

Shad season has been closed since October 1, and the good news is that most fishermen have obeyed the law and released any shad they have caught.

The season will remain closed until November 30. This seasonal ban is designed to protect the shad during its peak breeding season. It’s been in effect since April 2005 and has proven invaluable in maintaining South African shad stocks.

Fishermen reported some good catches from Southport, Sandspit, The Block and Ramsgate, with bream on the bite, thanks to an improvement in sea conditions. There were reports of blacktail, five fingers, galjoen (black bream), brusher, kob and garrick being caught at various spots.

Eckhardt Potgieter bagged a few bronze bream last weekend. Dees Naicker of Port Shepstone caught a 23,4kg salmon at The Block in Port Shepstone last Friday. It seems like the fish are returning to the famous fishing spot, ‘The Block’, after many months’ absence.

Kaiden Mayes (15) of Port Edward caught a hammerhead shark (130cm) off Granny’s Pool; he is a junior member of the Marlin Ski-boat Club fishing team.

For bream fishing, one’s trace ideally needs to be a bit longer than usual to provide a bit of movement, and a round, orange float is needed. This float attracts the bream and allows them to hone in on the bait from far away. Use fairly large prawn bait, as bulkier baits produce a quicker and harder bite.

Remember, responsible fishing is keeping the shoreline as clean as possible and abiding by the bag limits.
