Runners raise cancer awareness
Runners took to the trails in Umdoni Park forest in their briefs, to make a statement in the fight against prostate and testicular cancer.
A group of enthusiastic runners from the Scottburgh Athletics Club and Bushlife Adventures Thirsty Thursday trail runners joined forces and donned their purple speedos for the Hollard Daredevil Run in support of cancer last Friday.
The run is a fundraising event to help fund the testing, awareness, support and research for prostate and testicular cancer through the Cancer Association of South Africa and the Prostate Foundation of SA.
Runners took to the trails in Umdoni Park forest in their briefs to make a statement in the fight against prostate and testicular cancer.
On the insistence of Ricky Hulley, the runners ran as a group, with the speedsters stopping often to wait for the laggers and with plenty of banter among the group.
After the run, a few cold beverages were shared.
The organisers said that running in a speedo may seem outrageous, but it’s for a serious cause.
Testicular cancer is most common in men aged 15 to 35 and is one of the most treatable cancers if detected early. By baring it all, they were leading by example and encouraging men to be bold enough to check themselves and take proactive steps for their health.
Thanks to Umdoni Park Golf Club for allowing runners the use of their facilities and forest, and also to Laura and Ricky Hulley for allowing the use of their trails.
