Mid-South Coast locals Yvonne Klopper and Jewels Blackbeard were inducted into the Nahoon Granny Grommets while caravanning at Yellowsands Caravan Park near East London earlier this year.
The experience inspired Yvonne to start a Granny Grommets in Scottburgh, and she has been growing the group ever since.
“My great love for the ocean started as a young girl, which motivated me to inspire other grannies like me to enjoy the waves,” she said.

She explained that the original concept was started by a retired school teacher in Albany, Australia.
“It then took off in many coastal towns in and around South Africa.”
Yvonne mentioned that Carte Blanche recently interviewed Jule Schroeter from Nahoon Granny Grommets, who stated that there are many benefits to body boarding, enjoyment of the surf, the outdoors, and making new friends.
Scotties Granny Grommets began on October 17 with just one granny in the ocean (being Yvonne) and six potential grommets on the shore.
The following week, 16 ladies arrived. Unfortunately, the surf conditions were unsafe due to the Mpanbamyoni River running into the bathing area after heavy rains.
Yvonne hopes that more like-minded people join in on the fun at Scottburgh main beach every Thursday at 09:00.
