Broomhead sweeps clean at Umdoni Park

The tournament was played over 36 holes strokeplay in two divisions.

Umdoni Park Golf Club played host to the annual Southern KZN Open last Sunday. It was won by Jason Broomhead (27) of Durban Country Club, who seems to enjoy this course, having also won this title in 2017 at the same venue.

Runner-up was Cameron Olivant (15) of Southbroom GC, who lost out in a sudden-death playoff on the first extra hole, three-putting the 3rd green from the bottom tier. Cameron also enjoys Umdoni, having won a junior tournament there earlier this year.
Both players finished on two under par, with Grant Olivier (Drak Gardens) in third place, one behind on 72 and 71. Fourth place was shared on level par by Jean-Marc Bouic (Southbroom) and Kalvin van Rensburg (Toti).

Local hope Jan-Willem McDermott had a promising first round of 70 but fell off the pace a touch in the afternoon with 74. If you’d told him before the start of play he would be tied with Gavin ‘Big Fish’ Sole of Southbroom, he probably would have thought he was in a playoff for the title, not sixth spot.

Another Umdoni member, Steve Swain, provided some joy for the locals by winning the A division nett on 79 and 77 off his seven handicap. He was super-solid the whole day with the exception of a quadruple bogey eight on the 4th hole – a hole with no water, no out of bounds, but yes, with some tangly rough and lurking bush.

B division honours went to Clive Manqele (Port St Johns GC) on scores of 82 and 87, followed by Ganas Naicker (Port Shepstone) on 88 and 84. Frikkie van Brakel (Selborne) was third on 91 and 84. Best nett went to Nkosinathi Mabaso (Darkies Golf Club).

The course was receptive to good scoring with limited wind and soft rain on and off during the day. The storm would break later.

The tournament will be held at Selborne Park next year at around about the same time of year.

Jan McDermott putts for birdie on the 9th hole at Umdoni Park Golf Club.
