Ugu denied tennis title defence in final

It was a lot of fun, with Hilton TC a fantastic venue.

Despite some classy play, the Ugu tennis team could not prevent hosts Umgungundlovu from wrestling the KZN Interdistricts trophy away from them last weekend.

The team of eight headed off to play at Hilton Tennis Club last Saturday morning, with play starting at 08:30.

Players were Martyn Nagtegal, David van Tichelen, Richard Short, Johan van Niekerk, Zelda Smook, Sue Pearson, Sharon van der Schyff and Renee Purtell.

The four participating districts were Ethekwini, King Cetshwayo, Ugu and Umgugundlovu (Midlands).

The first day’s play saw Ugu beat King Cetshwayo and Umgungundlovu beat Ethewini.

After a fantastic braai on Saturday, everyone enjoyed watching the Springboks get a win against England.

Sunday was, in effect, a final between Ugu and Umgungundlovu.

Despite the team putting up a great fight, Umgungundlovu proved too strong and lifted the trophy, one that has been played for since around the 1920s.

Ugu were defending their title from 2023 but were unfortunately not able to retain the cup.

Third place went to King Cetshwayo, and for the first time in a long time, Ethekwini came fourth.
