Full ‘Marx’ for Jean’s tennis tourney
Seven rounds were played, each comprising seven games.
Umtentweni Tennis Club enjoyed a Spoon competition organised by life member Jean Marx last Saturday. It was her tea duty and she figured it would be fun to mix things up a bit.
The 24 players were split into two groups of 12, one Santa and the other Claus. The structure, you could say, resembles two wheels spinning in opposite directions.
Winning Santas moved up a court, winning Claus down one. Losing players stayed on the court and were then paired with the winner from the opposite group.
It’s fair to mention that this caused a little confusion, with players at times not knowing which way to go – something similar to facing Justin Hinchliff when you don’t know if he’s going to serve right or left-handed!
Somehow, it all added to the fun and festivity of the event. Seven rounds were played, each comprising seven games.
Johan van Niekerk won the men’s on 34 games out of a maximum of 49. Mark Hannaway was runner-up on 32 games, with Ian Ackerman and David Rush tied for third on 31 games.
Winning woman was Liesl Smith on 39 games, with Chantelle Donald runner-up on 33 games.
Prizes were sponsored, and thanks were extended to those sponsors. The tennis was followed by a bring and braai.
