Greenkeepers’ reunion for van Niekerks

The format was one score on par fives, two on par fours and three on par threes.

Former greenkeeper at Southbroom Golf Club, Sean van Niekerk, has been back in town visiting his parents, Benny and Rhona of Port Edward.

Benny, now retired, was previously the greenkeeper at the Wild Coast Sun Country Club.

Sean now lives in Brisbane, Australia and has enjoyed playing at Southbroom during the holiday.

He was greenkeeper at Southbroom in the late ’90s and early ’00s before moving to Johannesburg and then Down Under.

His golf has been surprisingly good considering how little he has played, but he seemed more interested in the changes and growth, including the lack of casuarinas and the wonderful abundance of tree, plant and bird life on the course.

In regular golf, the Wednesday alliance was won by Louise Leal, Shirley Jeffery and Sandy FitzGerald on 84 points.

In second place were Gjertrud Kok, Augie D’Ewes and Jill O’Callaghan on 73 points.

The men’s alliance was won by Werner Duggan, Ralph Probst, Neill Crossey and Christer Solgevik on 90 points.

Runners-up on 86 points were Norman Farrell, Mike Lig, Rob Meydell and Bruce Begley.

The format was one score on par fives, two on par fours and three on par threes.

Saturday’s betterball was won by Jenny Brewis and Heleen Hissey on 43 points, by two from Sandy FitzGerald and Louise Leal on 41 points.

In third place on 40 points were Val Volck and Arlene Bailey.

The men’s competition saw three pairs card 44 points, with the countout favouring James Carlsen and Anton Kohrmann.

Runners-up were Bob Carmichael and Peter Leeming, with Johan Wentzel and Brian Jolliffe settling for third place.

In fourth spot were Gavin Edwards and Mike Algie on 43 points.

Chicken Run: Alex Crawford 20, Arlene Bailey 19, Heiner Spoerri 16.
