World Cup beckons for South Coast’s Ashley Lombard
It's a massive honour for the South Coast cricketer.
Ashley Lombard has been chosen for the Proteas Veteran’s (over 40s) team to play in the T20 World Cup in Karachi, Pakistan in December.
It’s a huge achievement but there’s also a huge cost involved to get there as it’s not funded. In short, he needs around R60k to make it possible.
Ashley has grown up on the South Coast and can’t remember a time when he wasn’t playing cricket.
He started out as a skinny kid bowling as fast as possible, his whippy left-armers troubling most batsmen.
He could always bat, but never really took it that seriously until after school, when he spent time in the Dolphins Academy and refined his technique.
Since then he hasn’t looked back and has hit many bowlers to all parts of the province.
He played a key role in seeing Southern KZN gain promotion to the premier league for next season.
When it comes to bowling, he will only have a go if absolutely necessary, with some shoulder and elbow issues not really helping.
He can also keep wicket, which he really enjoys as it’s the keeper’s prerogative to keep the chirps flying – and anyone who’s ever played with or against Ashley will know that. Perhaps especially those he’s played against.
Being selected for the team is not only an incredible personal achievement for Ashley, but also a proud moment for the entire community.
He’s the only player from the South Coast to have been selected, and will be flying the local flag on an international stage.
He has dedicated his life to cricket, previously representing South Africa in Action Cricket.
His selection is a testament to his unwavering commitment, passion and talent.
Unfortunately, this tour is not funded, and Ashley is seeking sponsorship to make this dream a reality.
The total cost of R60k includes international flights, accommodation and playing kits.
