Abadala tennis goes down a treat in Uvongo

Convener Sharon van der Schyff was instrumental in seeing the tournament being added to the tennis calendar.

National ranking points were on offer at a new Tennis South Africa tournament held on the South Coast.

Named the Ugu Abadala (in isiZulu it means elders or seniors) it saw local players being joined by those from further afield when play took place at Uvongo and Douglas Mitchell tennis clubs, with finals held at Uvongo.

The two-day event enjoyed some wonderful winter weather, with wonderful camaraderie both on and off the court.

Johan van Niekerk and Martyn Nagtegaal enjoyed the men’s singles 55 won by Martyn.

It was played in age divisions, but this does not restrict older players competing in younger divisions.
This sets things up perfectly for the annual Ugu Masters, set to take place in summer.

Before that, there’s the popular Ugu 190s taking place, starting on June 28, July 12, August 2 and September 13.
Teams must comprise two men and two women, with combined age not less than 190 years. Text Sharon van der Schyff for more information on 083 2631398.
