Shoreline Challenge: Schools encouraged to walk, learn and protect the coastline

The walks, organised with partners Boogie Babes, conservancies and NSRI, also promote beach clean ups and ocean awareness.

The Mzimkhulu Honorary Officers are calling on South Coast schools and learners to join this year’s Shoreline Challenge, a fun, educational series of beach walks from Oslo Beach to Port Edward.

Visiting from Kokstad Junior School are (back, from left) Wendy Pride, Tersia Bosman, Birgitta Mackenzie, Sally Burnett, Shadelle Brennan and Charl de Jager; (middle) Mia Grant, Ashleigh Thomas, Belinda Lubbe, Lamise Smith, Michelle Barker and Jeran Lubbe, with Courtney Barker in front.

The challenge is broken into eight Sunday walks, held closest to the spring tides from May to August. Walks start at 08:00, with registration and coffee from 07:30.

Principal Michelle Barker from Kokstad Junior School and her staff joined last Sunday’s leg and are hoping to bring their Grade 7 learners along next time. “If staff could encourage learners, it would be a great way to spread conservation awareness among our youth,” said Maxine Willemse of the Mzimkhulu HOs.
