Suidies edge out Sheppie in cricket thriller
It was a low-scoring match but that did not detract from how close it ended up being.
When you hear of a sports game between Suidies and Sheppie the mind normally goes to the popular rugby derby.
But a cricket rivalry has developed of late, with both teams sporting some wonderfully talented players.
These two teams met in the final of the Southern KZN High Schools Winter 100, where a thrilling final played out at Port Shepstone Country Club recently.
Port Shepstone High batted first and made 88 all out, with a ball to spare.
Big-hitting opener Jordan Higgins was out for a duck, which seriously hampered their prospects.
Captain Shayden Gouveia batted with focus for 26 runs off 25 balls, with the only other meaningful contributions coming from Waheed Khan (15 off 17) and Uminathi Mdleko (13 off 15).
Sam Hall ran through the middle order with 3-2, with Liam Scholtz taking 2-4 and Karlo Jacobs 2-9.
In response, Suidies didn’t have things their own way, eventually only getting the score with six balls to spare and four wickets down.
Scholtz top-scored with 35 off 47, ably supported by Jacobs (still only in Grade 8) who made 25 off 32, including a sweetly timed six.
Nathan Pieterse closed the deal, cracking a quick 17 not out off 11 balls.
Gouveia was good with the ball, taking 2-11. Higgins picked up 1-10 and Siyethaba ‘Vuvu’ Gumede 1-15.
