Southbroom coast to league title

They went through the season unbeaten.

Southbroom Golf Club beat Selborne Park 8-4 to round off an unbeaten season and in doing so successfully defend the Southern KZN handicap league title.

The last games of the season, between Southbroom GC and Selborne Park, and Port Shepstone CC and Margate CC, were played at Port Shepstone last Sunday, with three teams still able to win, depending on which way results went.

Southbroom won the morning greensomes 2,5-1,5. André Attfield/Kevin Feinberg beat Myles Poole/Hartwieg du Rand 4/3.

Brian Jolliffe and Cody Dry beat Braam Stiglingh and Adrian van Vuuren 5/4.

The father and son pairing of Grant and Grantie Richards halved with Tony Outram and Tiaan Bekker.

Cyprian Xolo and Jan Nqoko lost 1-down to Darryl Herman and Jacques Kruger.

Southbroom had it mostly their own way in the singles, with Selborne not able to stage a comeback, much to the disappointment of Margate and Port Shepstone, embroiled in a battle of their own and not out of it, should Southbroom slip up. It was not to be, not this year anyway.

For Southbroom, Feinberg beat Poole 6/5 while Attfield halved with Du Rand.
Dry beat Stiglingh 5/4 and Jolliffe beat Van Vuuren 4/2.

Richards junior lost 3/2 to Outram, leaving the captain, Richards senior, to secure the winning point by beating Bekker 3/2.

At almost the same time, Nqoko took the score to eight points by beating Kruger 5/3.
Xolo lost by the same margin to Herman, 5/4 but it didn’t matter by then.

In the other game, Port Shepstone made the most of their home course advantage to edge out Margate CC 6,5-5,5 and in doing so secure second place for the year.

Greensomes were shared two apiece and were hard fought.
Ian Stewart/Theo van Rooyen beat John Hopley/Johan Stoltz 2/1.

Jan Nqoko holds his own for Southbroom GC.

Gavin van Wyk/Allan Clark lost to George Nagel/Conrad Boonzaier 1-down.

Hendrik/Johann Janse van Rensburg lost to Rupert Niebuhr/Andries Fourie 3/1.
Cameron Olivant/Francois du Toit beat Joe Espach/Mike Algie 1-up.

The singles ebbed and flowed, with Sheppie getting the extra point they needed, thanks to a crucial half from Johann ‘Vaaitjie’ Janse van Rensburg against Fourie.

This was especially impressive as he had been six down after eight holes.
Before that, Stewart beat Hopley 6/5 but Van Rooyen lost to Stoltz 5/4.

Clark beat Nagel 3/2 and Van Wyk beat Boonzaier 1-up to get Sheppie to five points overall.
Hendrik Janse van Rensburg lost to Niebuhr 5/4.

In the top game, du Toit lost to Espach 6/5 and Olivant beat Algie 5/3, meaning it all came down to Vaaitjjie’s game and he duly delivered.

Port Shepstone 5 (25,5)
