Johan strikes gold in Gauteng

Johan van Niekerk enjoyed a golden time at the recent Tennis South Africa Masters Interpro held at Gauteng East Tennis Complex in Benoni.

It was held in five sections. All in all, KZN won two gold medals, one silver and one bronze.
Johan, who is a member at Uvongo and Umtentweni, teamed up with Desmond Mayne to take gold in the men’s 60+ doubles.
Ian Ackerman (Umtentweni) and Miles Foxcroft had to settle for silver in the same section.
Sharon van der Schyff (Southbroom) and Cathy Kirton (Umtentweni) earned bronze with Paul Robert and Pumla Xotyeni in the 70 A and B Cup.
The other gold won by KZN players did not feature any South Coasters, and was won by Braam de Villiers, Jeanette Robert, Ronel Botha and Neville Wright in the 60/65 B Cup and Shield section.
* Rain affected fixtures in the Ugu Tennis Association 190s Team competition, but it’s all up to date now.
Eight teams have competed in the A-section in two pools and four in the B-section.
The playoff finals will be played at Umtentweni Tennis Club on Wednesday, September 24 which is the Heritage Day public holiday.

B-section positions are as follows: Broomers 138, Court Jesters 114, Racquet Scientists 103, Elora 91.

* In other tennis news, the annual Uvongo Tennis Club Masters tournament is set to take place on the weekend of November 1 and 2. This year it has been renamed in memory of the club’s beloved president, Howard Osborne, who died on July 15 to the Howard Osborne Masters Open tournament. Full details to follow shortly.
