Shad on the bite

A few good sized shad were caught at The Block in Port Shepstone last week.

Fishermen reported some good catches of shad as the season officially gets into swing, with some excellent sizes caught at The Block in Port Shepstone and at Margate Pier.

The minimum size limit: 30cm total length. This allows fish to breed at least once before being caught and protects them during their fastest growth stage.

Bag limit is four per person per day. Scientists determine how many fish can be harvested safely, ensuring enough remain for everyone, especially when the fish are ‘on the bite’.

The closed season for shad is from October 1 to November 30. This protects them during the peak of their breeding season.
