Youngsters embrace lawn bowls

The plan is to work with local schools and community groups to ensure the opportunity reaches those who would benefit most.

Bowls is rolling into a new generation as the Kingfisher Bowling Association coaches’ standing committee launches an exciting development programme aimed at getting young people involved in the sport.

This programme is designed to provide young people with an opportunity to engage in a healthy, social and skill-building activity that is both inclusive and affordable – with the right support.

Lawn bowls is often associated with older generations, but in recent years, it has proven to be an excellent sport for young people as well. It encourages discipline, patience, strategic thinking and most importantly respect – not just for the game, but for others.

It is a sport that promotes inclusivity across ages, genders, and abilities, and offers a safe, welcoming environment for young people to grow.

It all started with a grandmother who is a member at Southbroom Bowling Club, enquiring about bowls for children and if it will be possible to coach them. They are all home-schooled and have no sport activities. She wanted to introduce them to lawn bowls to give them a forum for socialising and be able to participate in a sport.

They started their coaching on July 17, and since then they are coming back every week for more. Every practise takes about two hours.

Amanda Visser, convenor of the association, said they would like to grow the sport, especially under the home scholars and hopefully later with other schools in the area, with the aim to start a school league in the future.

“Our goal is to create a sustainable programme that not only teaches children how to play, but also fosters community spirit, self-confidence and long-term healthy habits.”

They plan to work with local schools and community groups to ensure the opportunity reaches those who would benefit most.
