Midmar Mile on the cards

One of biggest events, the 53rd showcase will be held from February 7-8.

This year marks the 53rd aQuellé Midmar Mile – South Africa’s and the world’s largest open water swimming event.

The first half of the 2025/26 aQuelle Midmar Open Water Season has raced by in a flash, with three packed seeding events done and only a few weeks to go until the iconic Midmar Mile weekend.

2026 kicks off at Baynesfield before returning to Prime View for the Midmar Swim Festival on January 17-18, powering all straight into the home stretch and towards the 53rd Midmar Mile on February 7-8.

The event draws hundreds of participants from all parts of the country, including several from Scottburgh and surrounding areas, from elite athletes to recreational swimmers.

The race is approximately one mile, 1.6km long, and there are swim events for all ages and different levels of swimmers including disability, families, teams and professionals.

In 2009 the event (in which 13 755 competitors finished the race) was recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest open water swimming event.

The Midmar Mile is split over two days allowing swimmers to participate in multiple events in various categories and to have multiple dam crossings.
